NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- A "threatening message" on a stall in a girls bathroom at North Kingstown High School appears to have been a hoax, officials said.

A high school student discovered the message in one of the girls bathrooms Wednesday morning, Supt. Phil Auger said. School officials closed the bathroom and called the police around 8:30 a.m.

Students were not evacuated, and classes were not disrupted, Auger said.

Auger declined to comment on what the message said, citing the ongoing investigation. The message has been removed.

"At no time during our investigation have we felt the need, nor do we presently, to take any further action," high school Principal Tom Kenworthy wrote to parents in a message around 11:15 a.m.

"We feel, after the police investigation, that it's not a credible threat," Auger said Wednesday afternoon.

Auger said while officials had ruled out the potential threat, a decision was made to notify parents given the state of heightened anxiety after a school shooting last week in Newtown, Conn.

Officials are reviewing surveillance cameras outside the bathroom to determine who had been in the bathroom.

In the aftermath of Friday's shooting in Connecticut, Auger said, North Kingstown police have stepped up patrols around the schools and visitors, who must be "buzzed in," are required to enter the building through the main door, next to the front office.
