PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline, a Providence Democrat entering his second term in 2013, has been appointed to the House Budget Committee, according to his office.
The committee is chaired by U.S. Rep. and former vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, a Republican from Wisconsin.
Cicilline, in a statement, said he looks forward to working "on the front lines of the fight" to "bolster" Social Security and "preserve" Medicare. He also promised to oppose Republican efforts to cut "infrastructure investments."
A former Providence mayor who was first elected to Congress in 2010, Cicilline will continue serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
He will no longer serve on the House Small Business Committee, however.
