PORTSMOUTH, R.I. -- The town's 375th anniversary year will kick off with a noon plunge into Narragansett Bay on Jan. 1, organizers said.
Participants and their supporters will gather at 11:30 a.m. at the Portsmouth Island Park Beach for what organizers call the "375 Polar Dive."
After the dive, hot chocolate and other refreshments will be served at the Beach House on Park Avenue.
Other events to mark the town's 375th anniversary include a parade weekend in August to which participants from the town's parent city of Portsmouth, England, are invited.
