The state announces a settlement in which groundwater will be cleaned up at the approximately 10-acre Davis liquid waste Superfund site in Smithfield. During the 1970s, the location accepted liquid and chemical wastes, among them paint and metal sludges, solvents, oily wastes, acids, pesticides, phenols, halogens, metals, and laboratory pharmaceuticals.

The police arrest a man running naked through the downtown Providence area who then jumped into the Providence River. The man, whose name and age the police have not released, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.
