PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Mayor Angel Taveras married Farah Escamilla in "a surprise ceremony" on Saturday, reports David Ortiz, the mayor's press secretary.
The site of the ceremony was not disclosed. It was followed by a private party, which also celebrated the first birthday of the couple's daughter, Farah Rose Taveras.
Rhode Island District Court Judge Rafael A. Ovalles, Taveras' uncle, performed the ceremony, which was attended by about 100 family members and close friends, including Cranston Mayor Allan Fung.
The couple was engaged earlier this month. Mrs. Taveras, 33, has chosen to be a stay-at-home mother after working as a legal assistant at the Providence-based law firm Pannone Lopes Devereaux & West.
