RICHMOND, RI -- Police used a cell phone to locate a Connecticut man who drove off with a friend's 9-year-old daughter on New Year's Eve.

Police arrested Dan Candales, 42, of Lisbon, Conn., in the parking lot of the Stop & Shop on Kingstown Road at 9:45 p.m. Monday, according Richmond Police Lt. John Arnold. He was charged as a fugitive from justice and is being held at the ACI. The girl was returned to Stonington, Conn.

Candales had gone to the Stonington, Conn. police station for a custodial exchange with his ex-wife, according to Stonington Police Captain Jerry Desmond. He was accompanied by a female friend and her 9-year-old. After creating a disturbance, Candales drove off with the 9-year-old, eluding the police through Pawcatuck, Westerly, Hopkinton and Richmond, according to Desmond. Police issued an Amber Alert.

Information about a cell phone led Richmond police to Candales, Desmond said.

Stonington police have charged Candales with two counts of risk of injury to a minor, reckless driving, engaging an officer in pursuit and breach of peace.
