NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I.-- About 300 people were on hand for the third inauguration of Mayor Charles A. Lombardi on Saturday in the auditorium at North Providence High School.
The event, billed as "a Saturday evening extravaganza,'' drew a large number of high-profile elected officials including U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline, State Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo, state senators, representatives and mayors from Pawtucket, Central Falls, Johnston, Cumberland and Cranston.
Former State Police Col. Brendan Doherty, a Republican, who lost the race for the 1st Congressional District seat to Cicilline, also was in attendance. There has been plenty of speculation that Doherty, Democrat Raimondo and Cranston Mayor Alan Fung, also a Republican, may be interested in running for governor.
Lombardi said that during his tenure the town has cut costs and improved services.
