PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A four-time convicted felon who helped orchestrate the purchase of 10 firearms and over 750 rounds of ammunition to prepare for doomsday has pleaded guilty in federal court to being a felon in possession of firearms.

The Rhode Island U.S. attorney's office said Monday 47-year-old Peter Laporte of Warwick changed his plea in U.S. District Court in Providence on Monday.

Authorities say Laporte and his wife went to a gun shop in Richmond on July 30 and that he advised her to buy four 9mm pistols, a .357 revolver, two semi-automatic assault rifles, a Remington 30-6 rifle and two shotguns. He said he wanted to prepare for "doomsday."

Laporte was arrested in August when he went to pick up the items.

He's scheduled to be sentenced March 28.
