COVENTRY, R.I. -- House Speaker Gordon D. Fox and other state lawmakers on Friday toured the former Anthony Mill on the banks of the Pawtuxet River, which is being redeveloped thanks to the state's old historic tax credit program.
Fox and other leaders have voiced support for reviving the tax credit program, which was closed to new applicants in 2008 after concerns about its budgetary impact.
"From everything that I've heard, this is exactly what this program was designed to do," Fox said after the tour.
State leaders say if the program could be overhauled to address past problems, it could provide a stimulus to Rhode Island.
The program provides a discount on state income taxes worth 25 percent of a project's costs.
