CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. -- There will be no primary next month to replace newly-elected Mayor James A. Diossa on the City Council.

That's because only two candidates declared by today's 4 p.m. deadline. Three or more were needed for the city to hold a nonpartisan primary next month.

Now, the candidates, Steven Corrales, an administrator at Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy, and Jeremiah ''Augie'' O'Connor, a retired Central Falls police officer, will meet in a special election on March 26.

The winner will represent Ward 4 for the last year of Diossa's term. Corrales is a friend and supporter of Diossa, while O'Connor ran for the council seat in 2009 and lost to Diossa.

O'Connor had been an ally of ex-Mayor Charles D. Moreau, who is headed to prison on a corruption charge.
