NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- A raccoon that could be rabid and is still at large bit one person and two dogs Monday evening on Heritage Road, officials at the R.I. Department of Environmental Management reported Tuesday.
Cautioning people to avoid wildlife and report any sick or abnormally-behaving wildlife, DEM officials said the vaccination status of the dogs is being evaluated, and the person is being treated for rabies exposure.
Anyone who could have had contact with the raccoon, or who owns a domestic animal that may have had contact with it must report it to animal control or to the environmental police at (401) 222-3070.
Precautions against rabies include: Stay away from wildlife, have pets vaccinated, secure garbage and don't leave pet food outside.
