PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A lawmaker in Rhode Island wants to pass a law to stop motorists from driving with dogs in their laps.

State Rep. Peter Palumbo announced legislation this week that would allow police to issue $85 tickets to motorists who allow their pet to sit in their lap while driving. The Cranston Democrat says the practice poses a danger to themselves, their pet and other drivers.

Palumbo says he loves dogs "as much as anyone" but common sense must prevail when it comes to road safety.

Palumbo says Hawaii already has a similar law. His legislation has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for review.
