Today in RI history: Fire forces evacuation of Barrington High School

A year ago today:
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport contributed more than $1.1 billion to the economy in 2011. That includes $634 million for payroll, construction and facility support and $517 million in contracts for technical support and specialized equipment.

5 years ago today:
Authorities are investigating the death of a college student from North Attleboro who was found dead in Rome. Karen Young, a junior at the University of South Carolina, was studying abroad at John Cabot University in Rome.

25 years ago today:
A suspicious fire in the boys' locker room at Barrington High School causes the evacuation of 850 students and cancellation of afternoon examinations. School principal John Gray, who tried to douse the flames, suffered smoke inhalation.
