PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- He was a cosponsor of the bill that would legalize same-sex marriage, but when the House voted last week 51 to 19 to pass the bill, state Rep. William San Bento Jr. was among those who voted against.

Asked why, the Pawtucket Democrat said this week that he is a Catholic and "a religious guy that just couldn't continue and give that vote" for same-sex marriage.

"If it came up again this year, I would vote against it again," he said.

San Bento said he signed on as a cosponsor with the idea that at least the bill would get a hearing in committee, which it did.

With passage in the House, the bill has been sent to the Senate.
