PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Surf's up this weekend -- big time.
That's what the state Department of Environmental Management said Friday in warning that while Hurricane Leslie may be far off in the Atlantic, the storm will send large and dangerous waves against Rhode Island beaches Saturday and Sunday. Rip currents are also anticipated, the DEM said.

Breakers in excess of 12 feet are possible for steeply sloping beaches exposed to the open ocean. Spectators on shoreline rocks should exercise caution.
Only Scarborough State Beach will have lifeguards on duty.
The rough seas could send swells into some inlets and harbor entrances, and could cause difficult navigation for operators of small craft.
