PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The same man is believed to have robbed two Sovereign Bank branches in the city in less than 24 hours.

A skinny light-skinned man with slicked black hair in a ponytail handed a robbery note to a teller at the bank on 280 Atwells Ave., in Federal Hill, just after 10 a.m. Tuesday. He fled with the cash and disappeared into the neighborhood.

That robbery follows one at a Sovereign Bank branch at 551 North Main St., in Mount Hope, Monday afternoon, where a skinny man with a black ponytail scribbled out a robbery note on a deposit envelope.

Capt. Michael E. Correia said Tuesday afternoon that detectives believe the robber is the same man.

Police ask anyone with information about the robberies to contact detectives at (401) 243-6406 or email tips to policedept@providenceri.com.
