PROVIDENCE -- A state analysis of recent tax data shows there were 4,900 more jobs in Rhode Island in September 2012 than earlier reports indicated, according to the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training.

Tax data from 32,000 Rhode Island businesses shows a total of 464,400 jobs as of September, a gain of 4,700 from September 2011.

In contrast, earlier data compiled in a monthly report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed the state lost 200 jobs during that same year-to-year period. That and other monthly reports by the federal bureau are based on surveys of about 1,700 representative businesses.

Since August, the state has released such quarterly studies, saying they have a smaller margin of error than the monthly studies.
