PROVIDENCE, RI -- Shortly after a federal judge released a Warwick man charged Wednesday with smuggling and selling counterfeit sports jerseys, state authorities took him into custody for violating parole, a spokeswoman for Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin said Thursday.
Norman Cipriano Jr. is being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions without bail, said spokeswoman Amy Kempe.
Federal agents arrested Cipriano and raided his house Wednesday morning, seizing thousands of knockoff sports jerseys with an estimated $1 million street value.
Hours later, U.S. Special Magistrate Judge Lincoln D. Almond released Cipriano on unsecured bond; state prosecutors managed to draw up warrants for Cipriano's re-arrest before he left the courthouse, Kempe said. Cipriano has an extensive criminal history.
A violation hearing is scheduled for September 27.
