NORTH KINGSTOWN -- A CT scan of the young eagle convalescing at the Wildlife Rehabilitator Association center has revealed that the eagle was also shot in the head.
The scan shows that the eagle has a pellet in the right side of the brain, according to clinic director Jennifer Brooks. Previous examinations had shown the bird, found near the Johnston landfill, had been shot elsewhere in its body.
Veterinarians caring for the eagle, fondly called Eleanor, have given it prednizone to help reduce any swelling in the brain, according to Brooks. Bloodwork revealed the eagle is also suffering from lead poisoning but veterinarians had already determined that and medicated her.
Brooks said that the eagle's only hope for survival is to be able to feed itself. It is now has to be tube- or hand-fed.
