Providence tow-truck driver accused of leading police on chase held without bail

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Olneyville tow-truck driver accused in a wild police chase that left five officers and his sister injured was was held without bail after his arraignment Thursday afternoon in District Court.

Magistrate Judge Joseph Ippolito Jr. ordered Sean Sparfven, 30, held on $100,000 surety bail on the 14 charges from Thursday's incident and four charges of possession of a stolen motorvehicle. The State Police had been investigating Sparfven for using his tow truck to steal cars.

Ippolito ordered Sparfven held without bail as a violator of his probation.

State Police Colonel Steven O'Donnell said a state police detective and North Kingstown detective shot at Sparfven and his sister Wednesday when Sparfven drove the truck at them. Those detectives, two North Providence officers and a Providence cop were injured while chasing Sparfven. The sister was hit during the shooting, her condition wasn't known.

Sparfven faces two counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and nine other charges.
