PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency is giving the Providence Fire Department a grant worth more than $421,000 to buy equipment for firefighters.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant will be used to buy and upgrade outdated fire nozzles and buy protective equipment such as protective hoods and lights that can penetrate smoke.
The funding was announced by U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse together with U.S. Reps. Jim Langevin and David Cicilline.
The lawmakers wrote letters to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security supporting the fire department's application for the competitive grant.
