WARWICK, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island's attorney general is hosting "shred-a-thon" events across the state as part of National Consumer Protection Week.

Peter Kilmartin is holding the first of several events where residents' documents will be shredded for free at the Warwick Mall on Monday. His office says destroying confidential papers can help protect against identity theft.

Individuals may drop off up to two "banker boxes" of documents. Residents are asked to bring a non-perishable food item that will go to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

Other events are planned throughout the week, including in Westerly and Middletown on Tuesday and in Cranston and East Providence on Wednesday. "Shred-a-thon" events will be held in Lincoln, Pawtucket and Providence later in the week.
