EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Olivia Culpo, the reigning Miss Universe, was scheduled to Skype with students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 at Bay View Academy on Thursday in honor of International Women's Day.

But she surprised students by returning to her alma mater in-person. Culpo tweeted Thursday:

Culpo, who grew up in Cranston and graduated from Bay View in 2010, was there to share her experiences and answer questions about meeting women from around the world.

Joan Moran-Izzo, former WPRI/Fox News reporter and Bay View alumna, also participated.

Students tweeted photos of Culpo's visit and even hinted that she'd make a great speaker for 2013 commencement.

-- This story was originally published Wednesday at 5:22 p.m and updated Thursday at 3:40 and 5:40 p.m.

Correction: An earlier version incorrectly identified Joan Moran-Izzo as a 2010 alumna.
