PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Police are searching for a man who held up a laundromat at knifepoint in Providence early Saturday morning.
Officers were called to Laundromax at 932 Atwells Avenue shortly before 3 a.m. for a reported robbery. The suspect, who was wearing a ski mask and a black hooded sweatshirt, entered the laundromat through an unlocked side door and displayed a long kitchen knife, according to a police report. He ordered an employee to get on the floor, tried to gain access to the cash register and then entered a back room by force, the police were told.
The police found two wall safes in the back room opened and three metal containers with money on the floor. They also found a screw driver on a chair in the back room.
The suspect fled through the front door and made off with about $1,200 in cash and the keys to both wall safes, the police reported.
No one was injured in the robbery.
