The Rhode Island Ethics Commission heard options Tuesday for a statute of limitations for filing complaints alleging violations of the state Code of Ethics. Currently, there are no time limits for filing complaints.
Options presented by senior staff attorney Katherine D'Arezzo included a 10-year statute mirroring a "catch-all" civil statute set forth in state law. Another would require any complaint be filed no later than 10 years from the date of the alleged violation, but no more than two years after the respondent has left public office or employ.
Other options include a separate limitations period for alleged violations of the financial disclosure mandate.
Commissioners directed D'Arezzo to whittle the options for discussion at the next meeting, as a prelude to seeking public comment.
