PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The American Bar Association awarded the Rhode Island Judiciary an $18,000 grant toward creating a commission to improve legal access for the poor and disadvantaged.

Rhode Island was among five states to receive a grant aimed at helping the state launch an Access to Justice Commission, which would bring together players in the legal community to look at increasing access to justice for all.

Twenty-seven states and the District of Columbia have commissions. They are intended to boost resources for civil legal services, reduce barriers that prevent equal access to justice by low- and moderate-income people, and increase the commitment to pro-bono work.

Another goal is to increase awareness about the legal needs of low-income people and benefits of ensuring they do not go unmet.
