PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Scores of Rhode Islanders wearing red to show support for gay marriage have lined up at the state capitol in advance of a key hearing on legislation that would allow same-sex couples to wed in the last remaining New England state that doesn't allow it.
A Senate committee on Thursday will review the bill as well as a proposal to place gay marriage on the ballot. Gay marriage has passed the House but its fate remains uncertain in the Senate.
Christopher Utter and Stephen Pompei showed up seven hours early to ensure they got a seat in the small committee room. The Providence men have been together for 20 years and considered marrying in Massachusetts. They say they are holding out to wed in RI.
