PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island-style calamari, breaded, then fried or sautéed, and served with hot peppers, are seen on menus from Cape Cod to Charleston, S.C. Local fishermen take ashore 7 million pounds a year, accounting for 54 percent of squid landings in the Northeast.
So it wasn't shocking when Rep. Joseph McNamara, D-Warwick, last month submitted a bill proposing calamari as the state's official appetizer.
But is it a good thing to shine a light on calamari? There are lots of arguments, pro and con.
The public can weigh in Wednesday, when McNamara's bill has a hearing before the House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare, which he chairs. It will begin after the House session ends, as early as 4:30 p.m.
