PROVIDENCE -- Rhode Island Hospital is expanding its research space in the city's "Knowledge District" with a new hematology-oncology laboratory called the COBRE Center for Stem Cell Biology.

The lab is in the Coro Building, at 1 Hoppin St., Lifespan's research center. Its technology supports research on cancer, tissue injury and basic stem cell biology, the hospital said.

Current studies concern drug resistance in prostate cancer, chronic myelocytic leukemia and breast cancer. They also include studies on mesenchymal stem cells for their ability to reverse pulmonary hypertension, and research in novel anti-cancer treatments for pediatric and adult malignancies. The lab will also continue examining therapeutic mechanisms underlying refractory leukemia and lymphoma, the hospital said.

A new emphasis has been on detecting sub-concussion brain injury.
