COVENTRY, R.I. -- Superior Court Judge Brian P. Stern has asked an extensive group of state and local officials to attend a hearing Friday to discuss the fate of the financially troubled Central Coventry Fire District.
The list includes the chiefs of Central Coventry, Western Coventry, Hopkins Hill and Coventry fire districts, the town manager, police chief, town council and representatives of the Rhode Island Fire Marshal, Emergency Management Agency and Department of Health.
Council President Gary Cote said he met for about two hours Thursday with the fire chiefs and attorney Richard Land, the court-appointed special master for Central Coventry. Cote said the fire chiefs worked on a plan they will present to Stern Friday.
On Tuesday, voters again rejected a budget for the district, paving the way for its liquidation.
