PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence police and fire departments responded to a fire Tuesday morning in the Washington Park neighborhood and found "numerous marijuana plants'' on second floor of the apartment building.
Deputy Police Chief Thomas F. Oates III said investigators also found evidence that the gas and electronic boxes had been tampered with in the apartment at 280 Washington Ave., where the marijuana was found. He said that the police were getting a warrant to search the building. Nobody has been arrested.
Oates said a resident in the building, Kenny Garcia, called the Fire Department after he smelled something burning. Garcia escaped with his dog unharmed. It does not appear that anyone else was in the building.
Police and fire investigators were still there at 11 a.m.
