PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A man who had been sitting on the roof of the Providence Place mall, with his leg dangling over the side and threatening to jump, has agreed to surrender himself to police.

The man withdrew from the edge at 6:10 p.m., after keeping police at bay for more than an hour.

The man had been sitting on the roof of the garage, on the Route 95 side of the building, facing north with his back against a wall in the area of JC Penney. He was wearing jeans, a leather jacket and a close-shaven military-style haircut.

Emergency responders including police and firefighters went to the scene and negotiated with the man to come down, while police diverted traffic from the street below.

An earlier version of this story was published at 5:23 p.m.
