PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- House Speaker Gordon D. Fox on Thursday said he agrees with the governor and Senate president: there should be an assault weapons ban.
"I think they're dangerous. I think there are too many of those types of guns. Those guns kill people and so, I have been consistent,'' he said. 'I think we should ban them.''
But when asked if he expected a ban would be included in a package of gun bills to be unveiled Tuesday, he said: "There are many views on that and we're trying to work through the many views. It's one of those issues that brings a certain emotion to it."
He also acknowledged that it is an issue where he and his top deputy - House Majority Leader Nicholas Mattiello - "have differences of opinion on this issue.''
House Minority Leader Brian Newberry opposes "any additional gun control regulations," saying they would do nothing "to prevent what happened in Newtown, Conn.''
