SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Rescuers had to use a mechanical device Friday night to extricate a 21-year-old Pawtucket man whose car crashed into a granite wall that borders the Route 295 on-ramp from Route 44.
State police Lt. Mark Farnum said the motorist had actually been traveling north on 295 and was attempting to exit the highway via the eastbound Route 44 off-ramp when he lost control, crossed over the grass and crashed into the wall bordering the ramp leading to northbound 295 around 8:15 p.m.
The man was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with cuts, bruises and a possible broken ankle. Farnum said his blood was being tested to see if he was driving under the influence.
