Today in RI history: Freighter runs aground in Narragansett Bay

A year ago today:
The University of Rhode Island acknowledged Friday that its former president, Robert L. Carothers, OK'd a tuition waiver - reserved for full-time URI employees - for an employee of the private, nonprofit Institute for International Sport who was ineligible.

5 years ago today:
The Coast Guard is investigating what caused a 388-foot freighter to drag its anchor and run aground in the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. The freighter was freed on a rising tide at about 7 p.m.

25 years ago today:
Four University of Rhode Island students, members of Sigma Pi fraternity, have been suspended for up to two years in connection with an alleged sexual assault on two girls, ages 14 and 15, last September.
