CRANSTON, R.I. -- An 81-year-old woman was killed Friday night after she was hit by a passing vehicle on Route 295, according to Cranston police.
The woman was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police would not identify her because family members were still being notified of her death.
An initial investigation determined that the woman had stopped her green Kia SUV in the breakdown lane on Route 295 south sometime before 11 p.m.
She was standing outside the driver's side of her car and partially in the travel lane when she was hit by a car driven by Stephen Altomari, 29, of Greenville, the police said. There was no evidence of excessive speed or any form of impairment. The accident is still under investigation.
