Today in RI history: Moviemaker, doctors vouch for crime boss

A year ago today:
Rhode Island moviemaker Michael Corrente, three doctors, two lawyers, at least one businessman and a retired school teacher are vouching for reputed longtime crime boss Luigi "Baby Shacks" Manocchio in his renewed effort to win bail.

5 years ago today:
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, is operated on to repair a partially blocked artery in his neck, which was discovered during an examination of a decades-old back injury. Kennedy, 75, underwent the hour-long procedure on his left carotid artery - a major supplier of blood to the neck and head - at Massachusetts General Hospital.

25 years ago today:
Swastikas are painted on at least two synagogues and a pharmacy on the city's East Side.
