CENTRAL FALLS -- In his first cost-saving measure, recently elected Mayor James A. Diossa has decided to privatize trash collection and recycling, a move that is expected to save the city $400,000 over the next four years.

The decision means that the city will eliminate six positions, including one management post. Diossa said that two of the laborer posts have been unfilled for several months.

MTG Disposal of Seekonk is scheduled to begin garbage and recycling pickup in the city on June 1. They already provide the same services for East Providence, North Providence, West Warwick, Smithfield, Barrington and East Greenwich.

Central Falls emerged from federal bankruptcy and the state receivership is expected to end next week. Officials are looking for ways to cut costs.
