WARWICK, R.I. -- Superior Court Judge Brian P. Stern told a court hearing Monday that the financially strapped Central Coventry Fire District is still due to close at midnight Thursday.
Despite the efforts of several state legislators and local officials, Stern said he has not seen any short-term plan to keep the district going. Stern said he will not issue a tax levy on Central Coventry residents after they overwhelmingly rejected a budget on March 26.
But Stern said he would hold one more hearing, on Wednesday at 2 p.m., to see if anyone had a short-term solution that could keep the fire district alive.
"Once the doors are closed, the town and the state cannot tell you wnat will happen if you call 911," Stern said.
