WARWICK, R.I. -- A resolution to support same-sex marriage in Rhode Island drew a crowd of about 70 people to the Warwick City Council Monday night.
With the council listening to public comment during a subcommittee meeting, remarks from the audience were overwhelmingly in favor of the resolution submitted by Councilwoman Camille Vella-Wilkinson. The council unanimously voted to approve the resolution.
Gay couples, clergy and parents of children in same-sex marriages urged the council to show state legislators that the city supports equal treatment when it comes to marriage.
The state House of Representatives already has voted to legalize same-sex marriage and the Senate is expected to take up the issue later this month.
Vella-Wilkinson said it is the council's responsibility to advocate for all its citizens.
