A year ago today:
A Marine from Providence, Lance Cpl. Abraham Tarwoe, has been killed in Afghanistan, the Pentagon reports. Defense officials said Tarwoe died from wounds he had suffered during combat operations in Helmand province.

5 years ago today:
Assistant Secretary of State Christopher R. Hill, of Little Compton, is at the center of nuclear weapons negotiations between the United States, Russia, China, Japan and the two Koreas.

On April 13, 1988
25 years ago today:
A Navy frigate based in Newport strikes a mine in the Persian Gulf. Six casualties were reported. The frigate Samuel B. Roberts was in no danger of sinking, said Pentagon spokesman Dan Howard. No one was killed and the six personnel did not sustain life-threatening injuries, a Pentagon spokesman said.
