Today in RI history: Providence police exams canceled due to possible 'leak'

A year ago today:
Lowell Cornell, 53, of Coventry dies in an all-terrain vehicle crash about a quarter-mile into the woods behind Linda Drive in Coventry. Rescuers tried for an hour to save Cornell, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

5 years ago today:
Providence Police Chief Dean M. Esserman cancels a promotional examination for sergeant that had been scheduled for April 26 because confidential information about the exam allegedly had leaked to one of the candidates for promotion.

A car bomb explodes in front of a club for U.S. military personnel in Naples, Italy, killing five people and wounding at least 17, including three crewmen from the USS Capodanno, a destroyer escort homeported in Newport.
