NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is trying to capture an adult black bear that has been spotted roaming near the Gilbert Stuart homestead.
The bear has been prowling the area for about two weeks, said DEM Sgt. Frances Ethier. The DEM is trying to trap the bear, thus far without success.
It's unlike such bears to attack humans, she said, but the DEM urges people to be cautious. People who spot the bear should not approach it. Instead, they should report the bears location to the agency by calling (401) 222-3070. Also, residents should take in bird feeders or other food sources.
"They're really big raccoons," Ethier said. "It is becoming a bit of a nuisance."
