JAMESTOWN, R.I. -- Jamestown police are working at this moment to identify the body of a white woman found in shallow water on the island's west shore.
Police Chief Edward Mello told The Journal that a resident walking along the shore about 8:45 Sunday morning spotted the body floating about 4 feet offshore. Police pulled the body ashore, but could not immediately identify the woman.
The state medical examiner arrived at the scene around noontime, Mello said.
The U.S. Coast Guard is assisting Jamestown police and fire personnel as they investigate the body that apparently washed ashore overnight.
Investigators remain on the scene.
