COVENTRY, R.I. -- Firefighters in the Central Coventry Fire District are working without pay while the financially strapped Fire Department seeks ways to meet its payroll.
The district has raised the possibility of going into receivership. On Friday, Chief Andrew Baynes said the district is investigating that option but has not filed for receivership.
Meanwhile, Captain David Gorman, president of the Coventry Professional Firefighters Union, said the district's 52 firefighters have worked without pay for one week and are entering a second.
"We're here, and if an alarm comes in, we'll be responding," Gorman said. "How long this can go on, that's the million-dollar question. At some point, we will have to make a decision whether to come to work or not."
