PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline Wednesday criticized the U.S. Senate for failing to override a filibuster that prevented a vote on stiffer federal gun controls.
Cicilline issued this statement:
"The Senate not only failed to break a filibuster today, it failed its responsibility to serve the American people and particularly the families involved in the massacre at Newtown, Connecticut.
"More than 90 percent of all Americans support background checks on firearm purchases, and the failure to take any action on these measures is a grave disappointment.
"Today will not mark the end of this debate -- I look forward to continuing to fight for common-sense legislation that will help keep guns out of the hands of criminals, children, and those with serious mental illness."
