PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The mayor of Rhode Island's capital city was involved in a nighttime car chase that led to the arrest of a suspected drunk driver, WPRI.com has learned.
Shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, Providence Police say Mayor Angel Taveras was riding in the backseat of his city vehicle when a silver Ford Explorer nearly collided with the mayor's car near the intersection of Angell Street and Butler Avenue on the city's East Side.
According to a police report, Taveras noticed the driver "swerving all over the road" and suggested that Officer Earl Lopez, a veteran member of the mayor's security detail, stop the car "before he injures someone." Lopez proceeded to turn on his siren and reported that the vehicle attempted to speed away.
