PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- On Nov. 6, Rhode Island voters will decide whether the Twin River and Newport Grand slot parlors should be allowed to become full-fledged casinos, with table games.
Twin River, the larger of the two facilities, has spent more than $4 million so far to build support for the measure. In one recent TV commercial sponsored by the Coalition to Bring Jobs to R.I., a 501(c)4 nonprofit "social welfare" organization created by Twin River, an East Providence woman talks about the problems of the Rhode Island economy.
"By voting to approve [the casino measure], we can keep revenue right here, save 900 jobs and help create 650 new ones," she says.
