CHARLESTOWN, R.I. -- Chariho teachers Wednesday offered to give back $600,000 in teacher incentive pay that was included in the recently settled collective bargaining agreement.
Citing concern over the April 8 taxpayer rejection of the proposed school budget, the National Education Association Chariho President Robert Mayne said, in part, "Our concern as educators is that cuts to the budget could adversely affect the quality of education provided to the students of Chariho through increasing class size, reduction of staff, and elimination of programs."
Four hundred thousand dollars would be immediately available for budget reduction.
"A good number of educators in Chariho are also taxpayers in the district," Mayne said. "They believe this money could be better used to serve the needs of the district and the children of Chariho."
The School Committee declined to take any immediate action.
