The U.S. Senate confirms former Glocester police chief Jamie Hainsworth as the next U.S. marshal for Rhode Island. Hainsworth was nominated by President Obama in February and approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee this month.

Patrick Kennedy, son of U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, files Democratic nomination campaign papers for the Ninth District state representative seat. Kennedy's bid sets up a September primary battle against the five-term incumbent, Rep. John M. Skeffington Jr., who the day before had also filed the papers necessary to run.
